Poker Hands

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the May 12th, 2010

I’ve always been fascinated by how certain poker hands got their name. Some are straight forward. Ace-right is called dead man’s hand because it is the hand Wild Bill Hickok was allegedly holding when he was shot in the back in a saloon in the Dakotas. 10-3 is called the Doyle Brunson because that’s the hand that famously won him back-to-back World Series of Poker championships in the 70’s.

But one I’ve always wondered about is pocket threes, which is called “Crabs” for some reason. Maybe the number 3 looks like a crab, I don’t know. But the name fits for me, because pocket threes always leave me with a bad feeling.

There are certain hands for every online poker player that for some reason you love to play even though they lose most of the time. Crabs is that hand for me. Whenever I look down at my hand when playing Texas hold Em and see those pocket threes staring up at me, I am always filled with the urge to play them till the very end. Even if there are all overcards that come out on the flop, I have to literally force myself to throw them away. And when I do hit a good hand with threes, like a set for example, I still seemingly always get beat by a better hand. It just goes to show you, you shouldn’t become sentimentally attached to any cards in online poker. Especially crabs. They always leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Short Stack Race

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the April 28th, 2010

Short Stack Race When you’re short stacked in a online poker tournament, you can’t sit back and wait for monster hands to play. Basically you only have one move left, and that is to shove all your chips into the pot with any decent hand. With a short stack, you are going to have to push with an Ace and face or any pair when no one has bet in front of you. The larger stack poker online players will be aware of your status and precarious situation, so they’re more apt to call you too. When you find yourself in this situation, you must acknowledge that you are in a race with luck. Perhaps you have Ace-Jack suited so you shove your short stack, which is equivalent to ten blinds, to entice a call from a big stack. It is your only and best option here because it’s possible everyone will fold and you could win a round of blinds to help you survive. When called by a medium pocket pair, like 8s, you have six cards in the deck that can win it for you, or about a 24 percent chance to win. When extremely short stacked in poker online , perhaps with less than the next big and small blinds, then you have to take a stand with just about anything and expect to have more than one caller. In this instance, you’re better off shoving with speculative live cards - suited connectors like 9-10. Your callers most likely will have higher ranked cards that dominate yours. In this type of race, one over-card to yours is a 52 percent favorite and two over-cards 58 percent. Your chances of winning are only about 30 percent, but your cards could have more “live” possibilities than the overcards if two other players are holding one of each other’s outs, such as an Ace.

Beware of Bad Situations and Problem Hands

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the March 31st, 2010

Poker is a situational game. The same hand can be played differently by one player based on the situation. Recognizing the situation you’re in is a fundamental skill in poker. Avoiding bad situations is the key to profitable online poker playing.

Some players let themselves get sucked into bad situations that cost them lots of chips. Bad situations develop when players make these mistakes:

* Limping into a hand pre-flop with marginal cards, like A-9 or K-10. These look good as starting cards, especially from late position, but are still just long shot drawing hands at best.

* Making a continuation bet when it appears your cards are beat. This is a faint attempt at bluffing that most likely will fail. Don’t follow up an initial bad action, i.e. limping pre-flop with marginal cards, with more bad action.

* Calling post-flop bets when the flop gives you low pair or a longshot draw. Most likely you’ll lose and you are wasting your chips. Extricate yourself from this situation by folding.

* Making a crying call or playing sheriff just to see an opponent’s cards. This is a ridiculous situation for any smart poker online player. If you know you are beat, fold.

* Playing when you are on tilt. This is the worst situation because our judgment is clouded. Call it quits and wait for another day to play.

Recognizing Luck

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the March 5th, 2010

poker is surely a game of skill and luck. The word luck though has certain meaning to most people that actually hinders their ability to exploit it. When people think of good luck, they think of the long shot jackpot, like hitting the lottery. In poker , players often think of luck as being dealt a monster hand or hitting the case card on the river. This is a very limited perspective on luck and blinds poker online players to other ways they can leverage lucky opportunities. Experienced players learn to recognize these lucky circumstances and exploit them. For instance, if you are in the cut-off seat, to the right of the button, and everyone folds behind the blinds, a lucky opportunity may be there for you in that the players ahead of you had the bad luck to get raggy cards. The field is already narrow, and now you can play a speculative hand with a raise. You may take the blinds right there. Another lucky spot is when a pre-flop raiser checks after the flop. That signals weakness, perhaps your opponent’s suited cards or medium pocket pair missed the flop entirely. When a player acts weak, that could be your good luck Look for luck at the bubble in a tournament when the players typically tighten up. This situation can offer an opportunity to seize some chips. Luck is more that getting a monster hand - it is the ability to recognize lucky situations and exploit them.

2009 WSOP November Nine Profiles

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the February 3rd, 2010

Joseph Cada is right in the middle of the Nine with the fifth largest stack. He is also the youngest of the group at just 21 years old, and if he wins, he will usurp the title of youngest ever champion from last year’s Main Event winner Peter Eastgate. His poker winnings already amount to almost $500,00 and he has played in 16 WSOP events. He is from Michigan, USA, and dropped out of college to pursue a professional poker online career, which appears to be off to good start.

Right behind Cada is the oldest player among the November Nine, Kevin Schaffel. He is 51 years old and has been playing poker for many years. He has earned about $168,000 in tournament cashes, including $60,000 when he made to 42 in the 2004 Main Event. He also finished in the money in 324th position in 2008. Before becoming a professional poker player, he ran a printing and direct mail business in Florida. He attributes his poker success to remaining patient and calm at the tables.

The most famous of the November Nine is professional poker Phil Ivey, who already has seven WSOP championship bracelets to his name. Two of those he won at other 2009 events, and he almost made the final table in 2003, when he went out in 10th place. Many poker pundits consider him to be the best player in the world. His grandfather taught him to play when he was a child, and he began his professional career in the casino online at Atlantic City, New Jersey. He now lives in Las Vegas with his wife.

On Greed

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the December 30th, 2009

I’ve seen too many good players go home losers because of one flaw in their play. Greed. They play great all night, taking down pots all night, big ones, small ones, and I see their stack flowing over the edge of the table. Then out of nowhere it’s gone.

Well technically it’s not out of nowhere, there is a specific culprit in this situation, and that culprit is the marginal hand combined with the big pot. It comes with the territory of winning, you begin to become confident. Finally that confidence spills over into arrogance, and the arrogance busts you.

So let’s learn, shall we, about money management and when to take a win for a win and not push for more. Any serious poker online player will have some kind of bankroll. But what many poker online players that have a bankroll don’t have, is an expected profit. I like to call the two playing money and bankable money. Let’s say you have a bankroll of 5000 dollars. What I’d suggest is to take 1000 of it and make it bankable money. While it can still be used as online poker money if the need be, let it sit dormant at the moment and only count the remaining 4000 as your actual bankroll, your “playing money.”

A solid principle to keep your bankable money growing is to take 10% of all your winnings and put it in your bankable pool. So if you win 1000 in a session, take 100 of it and put it in the “bank” and add the 900 to your playable roll.

When you do this, you gain two important things. First you gain a padding to your roll in the case variance hits you and busts you hard. Second, you gain the ability to manage your money on a more delicate scale.

So what’s this all have to do with greed? Well, if you have realistic expectations for your bankroll, it will likely lead you to get up and leave the table even if you’re winning if you’ve met your set goal or “quota.” Essentially, by using the principle of bankable money, you won’t be tempted to squander away a night’s worth of winnings if you have tangible evidence that you won in the “bank” and also realize that you will have a larger roll to play with next time. When you put it like that, it’s hard for your mind to argue with itself over whether or not to try to double up 4k, or turn 4900 into 5800 next session.

With some rationality and self control, you will find that you can overcome your inherent gambler’s greed with the tangible results you’ll see when you walk away from the table.

General Cleaning Instructions for Your Bingo Equipment

Posted in Fun Place, Life of Style, University of Leisure by admin on the December 18th, 2009

So, you want to know how to keep your bingo machine and bingo equipment in good shape? It’s not an uncommon question. In fact, we are frequently asked about the best ways to keep bingo equipment clean and running smoothly. So, below is a quick guide on how to keep your bingo equipment as clean as possible without damaging anything.

Note: Before you begin cleaning anything, make sure that your bingo equipment is turned off and unplugged.

Bingo Machines and Bingo Flashboards

For metal surfaces, use a mild soap or cleanser with a soft cloth to wipe down your bingo console and bingo flashboards . Do not use a harsh cleanser. Harsh cleansers can easily damage lettering. For additional protection you may follow-up your cleaning with an automotive style polish. For acrylic surfaces, use mild soap or cleanser with a soft cloth as well. Finally, vacuum dust from the blower regularly to clean the ball chute area.

Bingo Machine Caller Monitor Use a mild soap or window cleaner with a soft cloth. Again, it is very important that you do not use anything abrasive.

Static Treatment Bingo balls can stick together due to static over time. To counter this, every few months you should lightly spray anti-static aerosol compound over the blower base pan foam and inside the chamber of the blower. If the anti-static tinsel found surrounding the blower base pan is damaged or missing, you should consider ordering a new one.

We hope this helps. Most of our cleaning tips are pretty easy and common sense. If your bingo equipment continues to labor or act up after a proper cleaning, we recommend you call a technician to troubleshoot the problem.

When Gutshots Are Considerable

Posted in Fun Place, Gamblers Lair, Internet Games by admin on the December 8th, 2009

Though obviously drawing at a gutshot straight (meaning you have one card, or four outs, you can hit), you are drawing against the odds. Almost no matter what your poker opponent has, if he has anything, he is ahead.

There are times, though, where drawing to a gutshot might pay off. Here are some things to think about:

Imagine there are several players in the pot and you are in position, last to act: on the flop, an early player bets a smallish amount in regards to the pot, three other players call. A loose online poker table, and you’re probably up against at least one decently made hand. With all those other people on board, you are getting good money even on your small cut. If you hit your hand, you will win those bets, and likely someone else will have a hand that can pay you even more, giving implied odds at the casino.

But: boes your draw make the nuts? If not, then putting your money in uphill for hand that might not even make it if gets there is bad business. If so, might it simultaneously make two pair for a player with suited connectors?

If the odds are there, and the pay off is there, and you don’t make it a habit outside of the right conditions, hitting a gutshot can pay dividendsnot to mention what proceeds you might reap when they all see what a donkey you are!
