Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote A Princess of Mars in four installments for a pulp magazine in 1912 when he needed to make some money. He stumbled onto one of the most prolific writing careers in history and soon afterward he would create the most famous pulp character: Tarzan. But it was John Carter of Mars, the action-adventure hero from A Princess of Mars, that actually set Burroughs’ career into motion.
